A Young Beauty at Her Vanity

Signed "R. Madrazo" (upper left)
Oil on canvas

A fashionable lady looks admiringly in her handmirror in this lovely portrait by Spanish Realist artist Raimundo Madrazo y Garreta, entitled A Young Beauty at Her Vanity. Madrazo's eye for detail and elegance made him a favorite amongst the bourgeois, and his mastery of technique and color earned him the reputation of being the most accomplished portraitist of his generation.

The son of the famous portrait painter Federico Madrazo, Raimundo was exposed to painting at an early age and immediately displayed an aptitude for it. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he studied with Carlos Luis de Ribera and Carlos de Haes. His training brought him to Paris and the emerging school of Spanish painters in 1860. There, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts with the artist Léon Cogniet and participated in the Universal Exhibition of that year. Madrazo would spend most of his life in Paris, earning his first medal and appointment to the Legion of Honor for his participation in the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
