A Prayer Before Battle

Signed and dated "J.J. Eeckhout 1841" (lower right)
Oil on panel

A wonderful historical scene by Belgian artist Jacques Joseph (Jacob) Eeckhout, known primarily for his genre and historical subjects. This outstanding, emotionally charged composition entitled A Prayer Before Battle evokes both the bravery and spirituality of the soldiers praying before a great battle.

Eeckhout originally planned to follow in his father's footsteps as a goldsmith, and did not begin his artistic career until the age of 28. He gained his formal art education at the Academy of Antwerp, and in 1822, he published a series of lithographs made after his drawings entitled Collection de portraits d'artistes modernes nes dans le Royaume des Pays-Bas. In 1823, he received his first major honor, winning first prize for genre painting at the Salon of Gent. He became a member of the Koninklijk Nederlandsch Instituut (Royal Netherlands Institute [of art]) in 1829, and in 1839, he was appointed Director of the Academy of Den Haag. He returned to live in Belgium in 1844 and finally settled in Paris in 1859, where he later ceased painting and began an interest in finance. As well as exhibiting in Brussels, he exhibited in London, Munich and Cologne between 1845 until his death in 1861.
