An important pair of watercolors by English academic, classical artist and illustrator William Stephen Coleman, executed with superior detail. A follower of the classical movement spearheaded by artists such as John Godward and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, he dutifully expresses the academic prowess that makes his paintings highly desirable.

Coleman originally planned to become surgeon, but soon found himself enamored by his hobby of painting. He painted throughout his life and exhibited prolifically between 1865-1879. A keen Naturalist at heart, he found his greatest commercial success illustrating such British publications such as Illustrated News and the London Almanac. At one point, his talent was so highly regarded that he even designed natural motifs for the famed ceramics firm of Minton.

Watercolors: 14 1/4" high x 20 3/4" wide
Frames: 22 1/2" high x 29 1/2" wide
