This phenomenal pair of 19th-century Irish library chairs boast richly detailed carvings of the highest order. A regal lion motif dominates the rich walnut, from the lion masks on the arms and along the frieze, to the paw feet upon which each chair rests. The extreme socio-economic polarity that existed in Ireland at this time resulted in a large population of poor and a small percentage of elite, with virtually no known middle class. Since few could afford exceptional furnishings such as these chairs, not many were ever created, making this pair an exceptional find.
