Young Soldiers

Signed "Wm. Morgan -1883" (upper right)
Oil on canvas

A group of children emulate soldiers marching into battle in this thought-provoking oil painting by American artist William Morgan entitled Young Soldiers. The innocent aspect of the children's play is juxtaposed with a surprising outburst in the lower left of the canvas, that of a boy striking and overtaking another, all while their leader remains in the shadows. A uniquely meaningful piece in the artist's body of work, Morgan composes a poignant commentary on war, portraying the difference between what is "seen" and "unseen" in combat, and how that is interpreted in the mind of a child.

William Morgan was an American portrait painter best known for his endearing views of children. Born in New York City, he studied at the National Academy of Design and later traveled to continue his studies in Le Havre, France. He became an associate member of the National Academy in 1862, as well as a member of the Artist's Fund Society of New York City.
