This rare leather trimmed, "Ideal" model travel trunk by Louis Vuitton is the epitome of expert luggage design. This exceptional case opens like a toolbox to reveal several compartments for storing everything a gentleman needed to be well and fully dressed. The double lid lies flat on each side of the trunk, showing the divided compartments, while the center tray lifts out, allowing for another level of storage that can even fit a top hat. Almost certainly a custom-designed piece, this trunk is covered in Vuittonite, a coated fabric created in 1904 and originally intended for automobile luggage. This waterproof, lightweight material could be colored to match the finish of any car body. Louis Vuitton is considered the world's first luxury company and its luggage and leather goods set the standard by which all others are measured. To find a period trunk by this company, in such excellent condition, attests to the superior quality of its craftsmanship. The "Ideal" trunk is among the more exceptional and rare pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage, and is extremely difficult to find on the market today.

The lock is marked "Bte S.G.D.G Patent; 1 Rue Scribe, Paris, Louis Vuitton, London,149 New Bond Street; Made in France" with the serial number 036889

The most famous and valuable trunks were made by the Louis Vuitton company. Renowned across the globe as the first premier luxury goods purveyor, Louis Vuitton first opened his doors in 1854, and among his first customers was the Empress Eugenie. His trunks were always impeccably crafted, with the finest leather, canvas and brass trim. Vuitton first made his mark with the creation of the flat-top steamer trunk and the wardrobe trunk. Flat-top trunks, unlike earlier rounded-top trunks, made cargo packing and stacking much easier. Many contained wooden hangers, and others even had portable beds! Thanks to the leather-lined compartments and hangers of the wardrobe trunks, travelers could pack delicate clothing without fear of damage in transit. To own such a trunk during the late 19th and early 20th century meant that one was able to travel abroad, something only the most affluent individuals did. A master of marketing, Vuitton passed his attention to detail to his son Georges, who created the iconic LV logo in 1896 after his father's death.
