Presented by President Andrew Jackson to Captain George G. Howell, this stately cane is a rare and significant artifact of American history. Comprised of a sturdy shaft with the original ferrule, this remarkable walking stick is topped with a gold cap with the inscription “Growth of the Hermitage Presented by Andrew Jackson to Geo. G. Howell” engraved in flowing script. This engraving indicates that the cane was probably fashioned from wood taken from a tree at the Hermitage, Jackson’s legendary 1,050-acre estate in Tennessee.
