A distinguished pair of American Rococo rosewood side chairs attributed to eminent furniture maker John Henry Belter of New York. In the pattern commonly referred to as Tuthill King, the chairs are adorned with an abundance of flowers and grapes and accented by shells and scrolls in a phenomenal pierced motif. Set upon backswept cabriole legs with original casters, these chairs exemplify Belter’s tremendous skill and innovation as an artisan.
Similar chairs are featured in American Furniture of the 19th Century: 1840-1880 by Eileen and Richard Dubrow.
