This exceptional carriage clock features a beautifully carved, one-piece case of exquisite tortoiseshell inlaid with intricate silver ribbons and floral garlands. Raised on silver bun feet, the clock has a lever escapement movement and tells the hour on a gold-accented porcelain dial. The mechanism is accessible from a silver-hinged back panel. Tortoiseshell carriage clocks such as this came into vogue at the end of the 19th century. Its inherent fragility made tortoiseshell extremely hard to work with, and to find a clock so wonderfully shaped and in such wonderful condition is truly rare.
