A donkey’s startled expression is captured in this rare Viennese cane. Perhaps he was unaware that upon pressing a button behind his ears, his tongue would protrude from his mouth! Sitting atop a stepped bamboo shaft, his intricately carved head also features an applied metal bridle, as a brass hand-turned ferrule protects the tip. Signed “Louis Berthold, Bad Homburg,” this cane is similar to one featured in Walkingsticks by Ulrich Klever, and crafted by the same artist.
