Known as the Improved Torricelli, this fine barometer is surrounded by a finely carved oak cabinet and includes a storm tube and thermometer marked Maple & Co. Evangelista Torricelli, born in 1608, was a physicist and mathemetician, serving as secretary to Galileo and later becoming his successor as professor of mathematics and philosophy at Florence. He invented the barometer in 1643, then called the Torricelli tube.
