A rare and majestic disc player complete with stand made by the famous music box manufacturers Polyphon Musikwerke of Leigpzig German. Set in a lavish mahogany case with burl walnut inlay and decorative carvings, this fantastic music box plays 19¾" discs on a horizontal mount with 154 teeth in the music comb. The top opens revealing a charming lithograph of children playing on the inside lid. Rarely found on a stand, the finely made mahogany piece below opens to a bin storing 14 interchangeable discs. Equipped with a side wind mechanism it is in excellent working condition.
A precursor to the gramophone, these marvelous music boxes were quite popular in the late 19th century.
