An outstanding and rare silver-gilt tea caddy crafted by Edward Farrell, one of the finest craftsmen working in the Rococo Revival style. This elaborately chased container incorporates a myriad of fantastic motifs into its design, such as a dragon finial and grotesque masks on each corner, while Rococo scroll cartouches enclose engraved armorials and the crests of the Trafford and Ashford families. Farrell, who worked with Paul Storr, excelled at creating highly figurative, elaborate pieces, and was known as a specialist in historical plate. He also supplied Frederick, the Duke of York, with monumental and ambitious works through his association with silversmith and jeweler Kensington Lewis.
