By the 14th century, Flemish weavers had established themselves as the superiors in the creation of elegant tapestries and their surviving masterworks are still considered the finest to date. This exquisite 19th-century Flemish pictorial tapestry was modeled after the artworks of Flemish genre painter David Teniers the Younger. Woven in warm earth tones, this commanding work depicts peasants bowling outside of a tavern. Named after Teniers, these Teniéres tapestries accurately depict life in the 17th century, particularly the various aspects of peasant activity– a genre which Teniers became famous for.
