A fine pair of Mary Gregory amber glass vases depicting a boy and girl at play with clear glass accents running along each side.
Circa 1890.
Influenced by the "painted cameo" glass produced in Europe after 1870, Mary Gregory glassware features the stylised white enamel painting usually of a Victorian child in an outdoor setting. Mary Gregory glass developed primarily in central Europe and was produced mainly between 1879-1939. It had long been believed that the term "Mary Gregory" was in reference to a decorator by that name that was employed by the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company in the 1880s. Although there was a "Mary Gregory" working for Boston and Sandwich at that time, Mary Gregory wares were never made by that company.
